Prayer for Generosity (St. Ignatius of Loyola)

Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.

A Prayer from Rev. Dan Haugh

Giving and Generous God
Help me to know that everything I have is a gift from you.
Help me to give back to others from what I have received.
May I be more giving of my time, treasure and talents
May I seek not to be blessed, but to be a blessing others
Cause me to open my heart and my hands with generosity towards all
Believing and knowing that your giving knows no end. Amen

Bible Verses

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.     – 2 Corinthians 9:7

"He who is generous will be blessed, for he gives some of his food to the poor."   Proverbs 22.9

"He who gives to the poor will never want, but he who shuts his eyes will have many curses."   Proverbs 28:27

"But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."   Matthew 6:3-4

"And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, 'Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.'"   Mark 12:41-44

"If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,' and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?"   James 2:15-16

How can I give more of the following this month?
Write down one to two ideas under each category. Perhaps there is one local charity or organization that you can volunteer with that will include giving of all three!

1. Time  - Can I find one afternoon a week or one Saturday morning this month to volunteer and give my time to a local organization?

Check out these local organizations:

Kids in Crisis, Neighbor to Neighbor, Carver Center, Inspirica, Boys and Girls Club

2. Talent - What skills do I have that could help someone else or benefit an organization?  Maybe its musical, athletic or tech-related.  Can I help someone learn or improve those skills?

3. Treasure (can I make a small donation each week? How much could I give? Can I give up my weekly (or daily) drink at Starbucks? If I did that, how much money could I give to someone in need?
