Round Hill Lectures

Once a year, the Round Hill Community Church in Greenwich invites a prominent speaker to explore the interface between spiritual values and contemporary culture. On January 5, 2013, Dr. Elaine Pagels, Professor of Religion at Princeton University and recipient of Rockefeller, Guggenheim, and MacArthur Fellowships, was the guest speaker at the Church. She spoke about her latest book, Revelations: Visions, Prophecy, and Politics in the Book of Revelation, published in March of this year and a New York Times Best Seller and Editors’ Choice.

Our Sanctuary was filled with people who were interested in hearing from Dr. Pagels and were not disappointed with her lecture, which was spiced with projections of pictures of artwork illustrating the story told in Revelation. She gave a "refresher" telling of the book and then offered some of her thoughts and interpretations as she has discussed in the book. After the lecture, Dr. Pagels signed books during a reception in the Parlor.

In 2013 the presidents of three nearby interdenominational seminaries spoke at the Church. Given that their role is to provide the best theological and ministerial education they can for future faith leaders, seminary presidents do have their fingers on the pulse of what is happening in the church and society, in this country and around the world. Dr. Heidi Hadsell of Hartford Seminary, the Rev. Dr. Serene Jones of Union Seminary, and Dr. Gregory Sterling of Yale Divinity School were with us on three different evenings with fascinating presentations about the state of educating our future religious leaders.

Previous Round Hill Lecturers have included Dr. Marcus J. Borg, Dr. Tony Campolo, Frederick Buechner, and Bruce Feiler.
