The
Center for Faith Development nurtures an inward journey of prayer and
study along with an outward journey of worship and engagement to deepen
our understanding of God's purpose in our lives.
Throughout the year the Center plans, presents, and evaluates adult programs
on relevant issues that educate, stimulate thinking, and promote dialogue.
Forums are typically held on Sundays at 11:15 a.m. (see the RHCC
Calendar for dates). Childcare is available.
This past year, the Center has offered Bible Study sessions led by guest
scholars and preachers; Meditation classes with Joel Baehr on the second
Tuesday evening of each month; sessions on building strong relationships
given by a local marriage counselor; a series of parenting workshops;
and an interactive study series based on the "Living the Questions" curriculum,
which encourages questions and discussion about a DVD series featuring
leading scholars in progressive Christianity.
Annual activities include an afternoon to discover the meaning and beauty
of the Advent Season, a Blessing of the Animals service in the Community
House, Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday supper services, and music
forums that address works being performed on Music Sunday and recitals.
The Women's Gathering meets most months to exchange ideas, nurture relationships,
and make new discoveries about the lives of one another. The RHCC Book
Club came about as an extension of the Women's Gathering and meets at
a private home every few months. Women's Spirit Rising is a Bible Study
group that meets once a month. The Men's Group meets several times a year
to hear various speakers and its members also provide services for many
church events.
Each year several adults and youth take a mission trip to an area in the
world needing assistance. In the past few years the group has gone to
Nicaragua, New Orleans, and rural Virginia.
The Helen Grand Thorne Lectureship was established in 1986 in loving memory
of Helen Grand Thorne (1916-1986) by her family and friends. The purpose
of the lectureship is to bring to this Church and our community a series
of distinguished leaders, either ordained or lay, who will explore the
interface between spiritual values and contemporary culture.
Recent lecturers have included Dr. Marcus J. Borg, Hundere Distinguished Professor of Religion and Culture at Oregon State University, Dr. Tony Campolo, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Eastern University and Founder and President of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education (EAPE), and Bruce Feiler, noted author of several books exploring the Bible.
